Frequently Asked Questions

How does the WAEC 9-point grading system work?
WAEC uses a 9-point scale from A1 (best, 75-100%) to F9 (fail, 0-39%). The grades are: A1 (Excellent), B2 (Very Good), B3 (Good), C4 (Credit), C5 (Credit), C6 (Credit), D7 (Pass), E8 (Pass), F9 (Fail). A "credit pass" means C6 or above — grades A1 through C6. D7 and E8 are considered passes but are not credits. Most university admission requirements specify a minimum of 5 credits, meaning five subjects at C6 or better.
What is an aggregate score and how is it calculated?
The aggregate score is the sum of your best 6 subject grades. Since each grade has a numerical value (A1=1, B2=2, etc.), a lower aggregate is better. The best possible aggregate is 6 (six A1 grades = 6×1 = 6) and the worst usable aggregate is 36 (six C6 grades = 6×6 = 36). Universities and polytechnics sometimes use aggregate scores as a cutoff for post-UTME screening — for example, some competitive programmes may require an aggregate of 12 or lower.
What is a credit pass in WAEC?
A credit pass is any grade from A1 to C6. Grades D7 (Pass) and E8 (Pass) are not considered credit passes even though the candidate technically passed the subject. This distinction matters because virtually all Nigerian university admission requirements specify "five credits" or "credit in English and Mathematics," which means those subjects must be C6 or better. A D7 in a required subject will disqualify you from most programmes, even though it is a pass.
Can I use NECO results with this calculator?
Yes. NECO (National Examinations Council) uses the same A1-F9 grading scale as WAEC. The grade boundaries and point values are identical, so you can enter your NECO grades in this calculator and get the same aggregate score and eligibility results. Most Nigerian universities accept both WAEC and NECO results, and you can even combine results from two sittings (one WAEC and one NECO) to make up the required five credits, though each university has its own policy on combining sittings.
What subjects are required for Medicine in Nigerian universities?
Medicine and Surgery at most Nigerian universities requires a minimum of five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Some universities require all five in a single sitting, while others accept two sittings. In addition to O-Level results, candidates must score above the university cutoff in JAMB UTME and pass the post-UTME screening. Competitive medical schools like UNILAG, UI, and UCH may require higher grade quality (e.g., mostly A1s and B2s) in practice even if C6 is the official minimum.
Is D7 a pass or a fail in WAEC?
D7 is officially a "Pass" in WAEC — the candidate demonstrated some knowledge of the subject. However, D7 is not a credit pass. This distinction is critical for university admission: if a programme requires "credit in Mathematics" and you have D7, you do not meet the requirement. D7 may be acceptable for some polytechnic programmes or as a non-required elective, but for the five core credits needed for most university courses, you need C6 or better. Many students retake WAEC or NECO to upgrade a D7 to a credit.

About this Tool

The WAEC Grade Calculator is a free tool for Nigerian students to calculate their aggregate score, count credit passes, and check admission eligibility based on their WAEC or NECO O-Level results. WAEC (West African Examinations Council) administers the WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination), the primary secondary school leaving exam taken by millions of students across West Africa every year. The exam uses a 9-point grading scale from A1 (Excellent, 75-100%) to F9 (Fail, 0-39%). A credit pass — any grade from A1 to C6 — is the standard minimum for university admission in Nigeria. Most programmes require at least five credit passes including English Language and Mathematics. This calculator lets you enter up to 9 subjects with their grades, then instantly shows your aggregate score (sum of your best 6 grades, where lower is better), the number of credit passes earned, and a subject-by-subject breakdown indicating whether each grade is a credit, pass, or fail. The admission eligibility checker compares your results against the standard minimum requirements for six popular courses: Medicine and Surgery, Engineering, Law, Accounting and Business, Computer Science, and Nursing. Each course has specific required subjects — for example, Medicine requires credits in English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, while Law requires English, Literature in English, and at least a C6 in Mathematics. The tool shows a clear checkmark or cross for each programme and lists any missing subject credits. Requirements shown are general guidelines followed by most federal and state universities. Specific cutoffs and subject combinations vary by institution and may change each admission cycle. Always verify requirements with your chosen university's admissions office.
